Some organizations recommend that healthcare professionals overcome their own sexist beliefs and emphasize the importance of dealing with gender inequality. Thus, this study focused on: (1) find out the levels of ambivalent sexism in a network of mental health professionals in Spain, (2) analyze the association between sexism, sociodemographic cha-racteristics and gender perspective, and (3) study the association between sexism and gender inequality detection during clinical attention. The sample was comprised of 449 mental health professionals who filled in the Ambivalent Sexism Inventory and another ad hoc questionnaire developed. Variables were compared by nonparametric analysis. The data showed low levels of sexism in the sample, and that the professionals who obtained lower levels of sexism found more problems related to gender inequality during clinical attention. The results underline the importance of intervention for reducing sexism of professionals in order to contribute to a more unbiased detection of problems of gender inequality
Global change at the Polar regions
CSIC SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGES: TOWARDS 2030, Vol. 7: GLOBAL CHANGE IMPACTS, CHALLENGE 4The Polar Regions are key Earth’s climate
regulators and, hence, any perturbation in their
baseline conditions can have global
repercussions. Owing their intrinsic
particularities such as the presence of huge
amounts of sea and continental ice, their
terrestrial and marine ecosystems are highly
sensitive to temperature fluctuations. In fact,
both the Arctic and the Antarctic Peninsula are
the regions where temperature has raised most
and faster than any other Earth’s place.
Moreover, other environmental issues related
to anthropogenic changes such as the
occurrence of contaminants, invasive species,
emerging diseases and exploitation of living
marine resources are also affecting the Polar
Regions. Therefore, sound, detailed and
long-term knowledge of the polar systems
functioning, interactions and feedbacks is of
paramount importance to establish and
characterize the main impacts and
consequences in both polar and extra-polar
latitudes. Only then, efficient and
environmentally friendly measures would be
established both to mitigate the negative effects
of current anthropogenic impactsPeer reviewe
A currently very important line of research in psychology is about Ambivalent Sexism (that has
two sub-components: hostile sexism –SH- and benevolent sexism –SB-). This construct appears
related to health and psychosocial risk factors in the general female population. This research
aims to investigate the relationship between the ambivalent sexism and some features of the
professionals of mental health in Andalusia. Using a correlational methodology, we examined the
relationship between sexism and some socio-demographic and labor characteristics of 415
professionals working in public mental health services in Andalusia. The results showed that
scores in both types of sexism were quite low (less than those found in other studies), and
significant differences were found between men and women in sexism (men scored higher on
both types of sexism). Of all the network of mental health professions, clinical psychology seems
the less sexist. No significant differences were found in sexism depending on the theoretical
model (c-behavioural, psychoanalysis, systemic…), except with those who adopted a gender
perspective, which appeared as less sexist. Finally, sexism was negatively related to the
detection of problems associated with gender in the consultation, but not with training in gender
issues
Soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces worldwide
Soil contamination is one of the main threats to ecosystem health and sustainability. Yet little is known about the extent to which soil contaminants differ between urban greenspaces and natural ecosystems. Here we show that urban greenspaces and adjacent natural areas (i.e., natural/semi-natural ecosystems) shared similar levels of multiple soil contaminants (metal(loid)s, pesticides, microplastics, and antibiotic resistance genes) across the globe. We reveal that human influence explained many forms of soil contamination worldwide. Socio-economic factors were integral to explaining the occurrence of soil contaminants worldwide. We further show that increased levels of multiple soil contaminants were linked with changes in microbial traits including genes associated with environmental stress resistance, nutrient cycling, and pathogenesis. Taken together, our work demonstrates that human-driven soil contamination in nearby natural areas mirrors that in urban greenspaces globally, and highlights that soil contaminants have the potential to cause dire consequences for ecosystem sustainability and human wellbeing
